The world celebrates the day of asteroids .. I know the story of the largest asteroid hitting the globe

Today, Tuesday, June 30, 2020, the scientific community and astronomers celebrate the Asteroids Day, which is an annual awareness campaign that aims to educate the entire population of the world to learn more about asteroids and what we can do to protect our planet, our families, societies and future generations.

In its report, the Jeddah Astronomical Society said that the World Asteroid Day occurs in conjunction with the anniversary of the Tunguska disaster in Siberia, which occurred on June 30, 1908 when the largest asteroid hit the globe in modern history.

The report pointed out that asteroids are rocks that do not contain air circling around the sun, but they are very small until we call them (planets), and there are tens of thousands of these small bodies that gather in a main belt called (asteroid belt) between Mars and Jupiter, and the asteroids that cross close to Earth Near-Earth objects are called.

The report pointed out that some people call the asteroids the name (small planets), which are from the remnants of the solar system about 4.6 billion years ago, and the sizes of the asteroids are from the dwarf planet (Ceres), which was previously classified as an asteroid, which has a drop of about 952 km to Small objects less than 1 km and the total mass of all asteroids is less than the mass of the Earth’s moon.

The report pointed out: In the early history of the solar system, Jupiter caused the prevention of the formation of planetary bodies in the space between it and Mars, which led that those small objects in that region collided with each other and destroyed the asteroids that we observe today.

The report continued: The asteroid belt or the main belt may contain millions of asteroids, and since the asteroids have remained the same since they were formed billions of years ago, their study may reveal secrets about the beginning of our solar system.

Nearly all asteroids have irregular shapes and a few are circular and are usually filled with holes and craters and orbit around the sun in elliptical orbits in addition to their irregular rotations.

The report indicated that more than 150 asteroids have been shown to possess one or two orbits around them, and there are also two asteroids that are identical in size, one orbiting around the other in addition to the presence of triple asteroids.
