The ‘warriors’ of the pandemic in Lanzarote | BE Lanzarote

On the last day of 2020, some of the ‘warriors’ on the front line of the fight against Covid-19 have gone through the microphones of SER Lanzarote, where they have remembered the best and also the most complicated moments that have left ten months of pandemic.

The health crisis has forever changed the way professionals of all branches work. This has been assured by Baltasar Gómez, nurse, first tracker and current head of tracker of Lanzarote, who explains that each crisis ‘is a before and after’.

Zaida Gopar, an auxiliary nursing care technician at the ICU Service of the Dr. José Molina Orosa Hospital, calls for responsibility and ensures that the public is still not aware of the difficult moments experienced in the different hospitals and ICUs.

NGOs such as Emerlan have also been fundamental actors in the management and coordination during the health crisis, of which Rubén López, director of resources, has explained how they have reinvented themselves, going from emergencies and rescues to also carry out social work that in the currently serves 400 families.

For his part, the manager of the Consortium of Security and Emergencies of the Cabildo de Lanzarote, Enrique Espinosa, has highlighted the coordination carried out in Lanzarote, where “we are privileged” thanks to the establishment of personal protection protocols (PPE), disinfection, and now also vaccination.

Both have seen their efforts increased due to the health crisis, but also to the migratory rebound, which has left tragic moments such as the shipwreck of the boat in Órzola where eight people lost their lives.

The Red Cross has also played a crucial role in assisting the migrants who have reached our shores, as well as the citizens of Lanzarote who are in a more disadvantaged situation.

José María Herrera Muñoz, technician of the Project for the Promotion of School Success in boys and girls with social difficulties, has passed through the study Priscila Rodríguez Jiménez, social worker of the Department of Social Intervention, Beatriz Pérez Cáceres, head of the Department of Volunteering, Mario Alberto Falero Villalba , head of the Communications ERIE and Tamar Luis Placeres, president of the Red Cross Insular Committee in Lanzarote.

All of them have contributed their testimony, and although they have recalled the need to maintain responsibility and respect security measures, they have sent a message of encouragement to continue advancing in 2021.
