The VMP association of Burgos sees the idea of compulsory insurance well

The new Traffic regulations that came into force at the beginning of this year contemplates a regulation of the so-called Personal Mobility Vehicles. Some rules of the game that the user groups themselves, but also from local administrations, have indicated that it is not very ambitious. Perhaps because it only establishes a starting point, but does not fully regulate this transport. The general director of the DGT, Pere Navarro, has recognized that it is a first step and that it is necessary to improve the text. For example, including the obligation to have insurance, which would be especially useful in the case of accidents. The VMP association of Burgos also sees it with good eyes, although with nuances.

Manuel Leal, president of this group, believes that “it is something necessary and logical.” First, because it improves the safety of users, but also “that of the rest of the people with whom we share the roads.” Not in vain, the accident rate has not only increased among scooters and cars, but there are more and more pedestrian accidents. The last one in the Burgos capital just a couple of weeks ago.

Of course, Leal points out that this mandatory regulation of VMP must arrive “without any double intention”, especially in terms of taxes. They hope, he emphasizes, that it does not have a tax collection claim. “Currently insurance is around 30 euros. Theirs is that they stay as they are and that they do not raise the price, “he emphasizes.

A month ago, Pere Navarro assured that this measure is already on the agenda of the General Directorate of Traffic and pointed to the regulation that they have carried out in France as a model to be copied. It is true that, beyond a more focused promise in the medium term, it only announced an imminent and strong awareness campaign for users of this type of vehicle, especially to avoid having to travel on the sidewalks.

In any case, and judging by how they are moving in other neighboring countries, Spain seems to be starting to arrive late. Italy is one of the last states that has joined this adaptation to the new times. The transalpine senate approved a text in June that includes mandatory insurance.
