The Virus Jumping to Humans is Increasingly Appearing, Beware of Rats and Bats

JawaPos.com – The emergence of various viruses and disease outbreaks as a sign of global warming. Various animals become intermediaries or sources of virus transmission because they can jump to humans, such as bats, mice, pangolins, and civets.

The emergence of the severe acute respiratory syndrome Coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2), the virus responsible for the Covid-19 pandemic, has led experts to research wild animals such as bats. Recently, researchers have identified a second zoonotic virus, monkeypox, which has been circulating in 21 countries outside of Africa which is normally endemic.

The Threat of the Virus Jumping from Animals to Humans

Monkeypox virus and SARS-CoV-2, are a global threat to public health. Some of the latest zoonotic animal viruses that have become endemic for the last few decades are Hantavirus, Ebola virus, Chikungunya, Avian Influenza, Dengue, Japanese Encephalitis, Nipah Virus, Viral Hepatitis, SARS-CoV, Middle East Respiratory Syndrome Coronavirus (MERS) CoV), and SARS-CoV-2. However, the main reservoir for most of these viruses is still unknown.

Pets are intermediate hosts who also suffer from this disease. Therefore, understanding of primary zoonotic hosts, as well as intermediate hosts, is required to effectively control pandemics and epidemics.

A new study published in Veterinary Quarterly aims to identify the primary host, intermediate host, and other animal reservoirs for SARS-CoV-2 and monkeypox viruses. Of the 320,000 viruses known to infect mammals, only 200 can infect humans.
