The view is obscured by the hood. Corvette owners complain about opening the boot rack while driving

All generations of the Chevrolet Corvette still had a hood on the hinges at the front. It’s not practical, but it’s effective – and it can’t happen that the hood opens for you while driving, even if you start with a half-open one.

But the C8 generation does not have an engine under the front hood, but space for luggage, and to make it easier to store things in it, the hood hinges are on the windshield, as in almost all other cars in the world.

One would say that it is not a problem, that the bonnet lock is not something that needs to be developed or that would somehow fail normally. Nevertheless, in at least eight cases in the United States, the new Corvette raised its hood while driving, damaging its hinges, itself, or body parts. One such case shows a video from the built-in on-board camera along with driving speed The hood rises at 43 mph, ie 69 km / h – no crazy speed.

Of course, this is not the first time in history that the hood has been opened to anyone while driving. But you usually associate it with old cars or with the fact that the driver left the hood open and drove off.

But the new Corvette tells you in three ways that the bonnet is open when you start – it beeps, shows an icon in the instrument panel and a big red message on the display. All three warnings at once are hard to ignore.

Because the hood is essentially a trunk, Chevrolet has made it open electronically using a button in the door or on the access module. So could it be that the driver accidentally pressed a button while driving? Yes, but as the next video shows, pressing the button only opens the hood when P is engaged, and then, of course, she warns. Pressing the buttons while driving has no effect.

In addition to the emergency pull over the pedals – which would be a problem to pull by mistake, even if you were driving like Mr. Bean from the roof of the car with a broom – the hood can be opened with an emergency button from the trunk. While driving, according to the Corvette Blogger website, which points out the problem, the object could theoretically be moved by pressing a button.

Even so, the hood would only open completely at speeds up to 5 km / h. It opens slightly above this limit, but remains secured. And of course, the sensor should immediately detect an open hood and report a problem on the display.

Of course, all this does not rule out any driver error, and there is no evidence that in all eight cases drivers simply did not ignore the warning messages. However, it is just as possible that there is a problem in the car’s electronics or in the lock itself.

Let’s wait for further development, the new Corvette would not be the first or last car to suffer from childhood diseases. However, opening the hood while driving would be quite serious, as it can cause a serious accident.
