The very rare spacesuit of 2001, the space odyssey put up for auction

A rare spacesuit used for the filming of 2001, the space odyssey, in a legendary scene from the cult film by Stanley Kubrick, will soon be auctioned off. Centerpiece of the sale organized in Beverly Hills on July 17 and 18, the costume is estimated to be between US $ 200,000 and US $ 300,000.

He is all the more sought after because the director, Stanley Kubrick, is reputed to have destroyed most of the props and costumes of the film in order to prevent them from being used in other cinematographic productions without his authorization.

The diving suit, which will be put under the hammer in July, was probably used during one of the most emblematic scenes of the Kubrick film, the one where Dr. David Bowman, played by Keir Dullea, destroyed HAL 9000, the computer which developed consciousness and decided to kill the astronauts in order to accomplish the mission for which it was programmed.

According to Jason DeBord, head of the auction house Julien’s Auctions which organizes the event, the only other major piece of the film sold at auction was the space shuttle Aries 1B, which transported Dr. Heywood Floyd from the space station to the moon. In 2015, it was acquired by the Academy of Cinema Arts and Sciences, which awards the Oscars each year, for US $ 344,000.

The costume had already been sold at auction in 1999 and has remained in a temperature-controlled room ever since. It’s like it’s gone from the face of the Earth, said Mr. DeBord to AFP.

2001, the space odyssey had been selected in four categories at the Oscars and had won it in that of special effects, thanks to the realism with which he represented space travel.

Among the 900 other objects sold by Julien’s Auctions are notably the piloting command used by Neil Armstrong during the flight of Apollo 11 to the Moon, estimated between $ 100,000 and $ 200,000, as well as a diving glove designed on measure for Armstrong.

Estimated between $ 20,000 and $ 40,000, Superman’s red cape, worn by Christopher Reeves in the 1978 film, is expected to fly to Beverly Hills next month.
