The vaccine is a big deal like the virus

Vaccination campaigns have started, in a more or less intense way according to the States. Of the 13 million doses already inoculated around the world, all have been in developed countries: 4.5 million in the United States and China, 1.3 million in the United Kingdom, 1.2 million in Israel … And 45,500 in France (let’s go).

It makes sense: the vaccine is a global affair like the virus. It would be unfortunate and inefficient if en route to forget the developing countries that do not have the resources to fund research, speed up testing and pre-order products.

Each year, humans spend 10% of global GDP for their health (about 6,000 billion euros), a lot in treatment, too little in prevention. The disparities are enormous between the North and the South. When Niger, one of the poorest countries, spends 44 € per year per capita on health, Switzerland pays 8,327 € (France 3,102 €).

We could be worried about the campaign against Covid-19, especially in these troubled times where UN multilateralism suffers. There are grounds for hope.

Two billion doses

The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Friday it hoped to start vaccinations between the end of January and mid-February. Together with the Vaccine Alliance (GAVI) and the Epidemic Prevention Coalition (CEPI), WHO created COVAX, a funding mechanism for 160 countries to vaccinate at least 20% of the population with 2 billion doses, half of which for the 92 poorest countries which represent 50% of the world population.

Sovereign donors, philanthropists (the Gates Foundation) and the private sector contribute to this fund. The European Union has invested more than 850 million euros in COVAX, lent 400 million through the European Investment Bank, plus aid of 100 million. What to reconcile us with Europe if it was necessary.
