Washington, Jan 21 (EFE) .- The US Department of Defense handles a series of options on the military capabilities it may need to be ready for a possible Russian invasion of Ukraine, Pentagon spokesman John Kirby.

“Our job is to prepare options,” Kirby told a news conference, noting that the US has to be ready in case its allies need it.

During his appearance, Kirby announced the participation of the USS Harry S. Truman aircraft carrier strike group in NATO’s Neptune Strike 22 maneuvers, which will begin next Monday and will run until February 4. in the Mediterranean.

The military exercise “is designed to demonstrate NATO’s ability to integrate the carrier strike group’s high-level maritime strike capabilities to support the Alliance’s deterrence and defense,” Kirby said.

The spokesman explained that these exercises were planned in 2020, without “anticipating” the current mobilization of Russian troops on the border with Ukraine.

The USS Harry S. Truman carrier strike group consists of five ships, the battlecruiser San Jacinto, and the missile destroyers Cole, BainBridge, Gravely, and Jason Dunham.

Regarding the Russian presence on the Ukrainian border, Kirby said that the US continues to see a strong presence of Russian forces in the area, that it is not decreasing and that it is “worrying”.

The foreign ministers of the US, Antony Blinken, and of Russia, Sergei Lavrov, met this Friday in Geneva (Switzerland) in a meeting that barely produced concrete results other than Moscow’s will to keep open a diplomatic channel of dialogue to try to resolve the crisis. EFE
