The upcoming EOS R5 should also be extremely exciting for filmmakers

Canon actually seems to be reacting to the weak market situation in recent years with increasing pressure to innovate, almost reminding of Sony in the last decade, when they introduced new cameras that were particularly interesting for filmmakers almost every six months.

That was already the case today Canon EOS C300 Mark III with solid features at an unexpectedly friendly price presented. And now Canon is teasing even more details about the upcoming EOS R5 with full frame sensor.

The EOS R5 is the first EOS R with an RF mount to be particularly interesting for filmmakers (probably similar to the Sony Alpha 7S series). According to Canon, the EOS R5 should have a range of functions that is otherwise only provided by high-end cinema cameras that cost many times over. There should also be video functions that no other mirrorless camera currently offers. The following features are now fixed for the new model:

– 8K RAW without crop, internal recording at up to 29.97 fps

– Internal recording in 8K (without crop) with up to 29.97 fps 4: 2: 24: 2 10th bitBit in Canon Log (H.265) or 4: 2: 24: 2 10th bitBit HDR PQ (H.265)

– Internal recording in 4K (without crop) with up to 119.88 fps 4: 2: 24: 2 10th bitBit in Canon Log (H.265) or 4: 2: 24: 2 10th bitBit HDR PQ (H.265)

4: 2: 24: 2 10th bitBit in Canon Log or 4: 2: 24: 2 10th bitBit HDR PQ output via HDMIHDMI at 4K 59.94 fps

– The dual pixelPixel CMOS AF is available in all video modes at all resolutions and frame rates

– The 5-axis optical IBIS (camera-internal image stabilizer). The combination of lens IS and camera IBIS is possible.

– Two card slots: 1 x CFexpress and 1 x SD UHS-II

Canon spoke in advance of an innovative internal IBIS image stabilization that can work in combination with the stabilization system in the lens. This should be a moving sensor, which is why Canon should now hold many aces in hand to finally be able to build on the popularity of the 5D Mark II and III among filmmakers.

This should particularly affect Sony, whose long-awaited Alpha 7S III or IV with comparable features has long been hoped for (but hardly expected). The only question mark for the EOS R5 for us is the dynamics, which could probably be 1-2 f-stops behind 4K cine cameras with 8K sensors. However, since it is a full frame sensor. At 8K, a sensor size of about 4.5 µm is still likely. And that is still on the level of a GH5s or a Blackmagic Pocket Cinema Camera 4K that can tickle out more than 13 aperture steps from such sensors. Scaled down to 4K, an additional aperture stop in the post could perhaps be gained in the shadows.

In any case, we are very impressed with the features Canon suddenly reports back to the filmmakers here. Especially since the competition has become very dependent on Sony sensors, from which you might not even get such film features as a camera manufacturer …
