The United States did not expect breakthroughs from negotiations with Russia

Anthony Blinken

Washington is ready to continue dialogue with Russia on security guarantees, but this will depend on the situation around Ukraine.

The head of the US State Department, Anthony Blinken, praised the security talks with Russia, saying that they did not expect a breakthrough, writes Voice of America.

At the same time, he believes that the meetings held “at the moment” cannot be called real negotiations.

“We have shared with the Russians our deep concern about the actions they are taking not only with respect to Ukraine, but in a broader sense. They have shared their concerns with us. We have given each other, I think, a lot of food for thought. Now we We plan to … carefully consult with our allies and partners,” Blinken said.

According to him, the continuation of the dialogue will take place only in case of de-escalation of the situation around Ukraine.

Blinken noted that the United States provided the Russian Federation with two options for action – diplomatic dialogue or confrontation with aggression.

“If they go down this path, it will have serious consequences … I will not specify what we will do, I will only say that if it comes to sanctions, economic and financial measures, and the need to strengthen Ukraine in terms of defense , strengthen the defense of NATO, we plan and are going to do something that has not been done before,” the Secretary of State said.

Blinken also noted that “President Putin is adept at the art of not giving a definitive answer,” so an attack on Ukraine is in question, but over the past couple of months, the United States, its allies and partners have been able to develop coordinated ways in which the Western coalition can respond to actions, undertaken by Russia.

If the Russian Federation decides to withdraw from the negotiation process, then, according to Blinken, “this will indicate that they probably never seriously considered the path of dialogue or diplomacy.”

He added that the United States is ready for any scenario.

After the OSCE meeting the day before, the United States announced escalation in relations with Russia.
