the unexpected (but deserved) success of “HATE & SEX”

“HATE & SEX” recently stood out from other Gazo tracks: a few weeks after the release of DRILL FR, the title stormed the French charts.

Tubes do not happen overnight and Gazo is witness to it. A few weeks after the release of his project DRILL FR, the rapper sees indeed the coast of his title “HATE & SEX” prodigiously increase. This week, the song reached the first place of the top 100 Apple Music France, and for a few days point to the second place of the Top 200 Spotify France. An almost unforeseen fate for the title of Gazo, which was not necessarily doomed to become the biggest hit of the project.

Indeed, when it was released on February 26, “HATE & SEX” rather melted into the mass of the Gazo project. Ranked 44th on release day DRILL FR, then straight down to 78th place the next day, the title almost even went unnoticed. However, it has undergone a significant increase in popularity in recent days, almost since the beginning of April, to grab places daily. This Thursday, April 15, “HATE & SEX” has accumulated more than 300,000 streams: for comparison, the entire Gazo mixtape compiled 1.6 million streams on the day of its release.

The success of the sulphurous, but dark “HATE & SEX”

But then, how to explain this success? Quite simply by the power of Gazo’s title. Between a melodious chorus that would fit perfectly to summer evenings and darker verses, the artist reveals himself lost between love and anger, between hatred and sex. “HATE & SEX” perfectly transcribes the quirks of an artist’s life, between jealousy, venality and treachery. Gazo’s narration seems to be inspired by experiences and sad disappointments, which he manages to sublimate in this tenth track of DRILL FR.

The success of the title consolidates Gazo’s position at the head of the French drill scene. Through his featurings with figures of rap and UK drill, Gazo has attracted the attention of British icons like Unknown T and PA Salieu on a remix of the single “Bang Out”. After the thunderous success of “Drill FR 4” alongside Freeze Corleone, Gazo holds his first solo hit with “HATE & SEX”. A hit that defies statistics, and which could take him high. Very high.
