UN Security Council Fails to Restore Sanctions on Iran,Moscow Vetoes resolution
NEW YORK – The United Nations Security Council on Friday failed to restore international sanctions on Iran,as Russia vetoed a resolution brought forward by the United States,France, and the United Kingdom. The vote marks a significant setback for efforts to curb iran’s nuclear program and comes as tensions remain high in the region.
the attempt to reinstate the sanctions-which had been lifted under the 2015 Joint complete Plan of Action (JCPOA)-was blocked despite support from a majority of Security Council members. Russia’s veto effectively ends any path to reviving the previous UN resolutions targeting Iran’s nuclear activities, according to Russian Deputy Ambassador Dmitry Polyanskiy, who stated, “There is no ‘snapback’ and there will be no ‘snapback’. Any attempt to resuscitate the anti-Iranian resolutions of the Security council in place before 2015 is zero.”
The 2015 JCPOA, originally signed by France, the United Kingdom, Germany, the United States, Russia, and China, offered Iran relief from sanctions in exchange for limitations on its nuclear program. However, the United States withdrew from the agreement in 2018 under President Donald Trump and reimposed its own sanctions. In response, Iran has rolled back some of its commitments under the deal, including increasing uranium enrichment.
Despite the restoration of sanctions being blocked, Iran affirmed its commitment to the Treaty on the Non-Proliferation of Nuclear Weapons (TNP). “We do not intend to leave the TNP,” assured Massoud Pezeshkian on Friday, while also accusing the United states of acting in bad faith during negotiations. Iranian President Ebrahim Raisi recently stated before the UN General Assembly, “Iran has never sought and will never seek to make an atomic bomb. We do not want nuclear weapons.”
