Abdullah took over from Frederick Kenny of the United States, who was loaned by the International Maritime Organization as interim coordinator.
Abdullah has over 30 years of experience in humanitarian response and management for the World Food Program (WFP). From 2009 to June 2022, he served as Deputy Executive Director and Chief Operating Officer of WFP, overseeing its humanitarian operations around the world.
