ACCEPTANCE – On May 12, Sohail Pardis, was driving from his home in the Capital Afghanistan , Kabul, to Khost province. He intends to pick up his sister to celebrate Eid which is coming soon.

It should be a happy event enjoyed with the family. But during the five-hour journey that day, as Pardis, 32, was passing through the desert, his vehicle was blocked at a checkpoint by Taliban insurgents.

A few days earlier, Pardis had told a friend that he had received death threats from the Taliban, who learned that he had worked as an interpreter for the US Army for 16 months during the 20-year conflict.

“They told him that you are an American spy, you are an American eye and you are an infidel, and we will kill you and your family,” said his friend and co-worker, Abdulhaq Ayoubi, imitating the threat in an interview with CNN, Friday (23/7/2021).

As he approached the checkpoint, Pardis stepped on the gas pedal to speed up. He doesn’t look alive anymore.

Villagers who witnessed the incident told the Red Crescent that the Taliban shot at his car before turning and stopping. They then dragged Pardis out of the vehicle and decapitated him.

Pardis is one of thousands of Afghan translators who worked for the US military and are now facing persecution by the Taliban, as the group controls wider swaths of the country.
