The Tour de Suisse is canceled this year

The 84th edition of the Tour de Suisse should have started on Sunday, June 7, with a single time trial in Frauenfeld. A week later, the round trip in Andermatt, part of the World Tour, would have ended with the queen stage with the Furka, Grimsel and Susten passes.

It is the first time in the 87-year history of the Tour de Suisse that the tour must be canceled in peacetime. Only the events scheduled for 1940, 1943, 1944 and 1945 could not be carried out due to the Second World War.

It was not an option for the organizers to run the Tour de Suisse later in the year because this was not feasible for logistical and financial reasons. The goal is now to carry out the tour planned for this year as identically as possible in June 2021. However, the exact date for the next event is not yet known, as the international racing calendar of the world association UCI has not yet been fixed.

Even if there are no World Tour races until at least mid-June, fans in Germany do not have to do without cycling entirely. There is at least a bit of Tour de Suisse in the form of e-sports. From April 22nd to 26th, real cycling professionals will virtually duel in the stage race “The Digital Swiss 5” and compete against each other on selected stages of the Tour de Suisse. Each race lasts one hour and is broadcast live on Swiss television (SRG).

A large number of riders from World Tour teams take part in the first digital pro-cycling race, including some of the best Swiss cycling professionals such as last year’s World Championship third Stefan Küng.
