The top woman of music festivals nationwide

Yes, Doris Morera de Castro, director of the National Colombian Music Festival, has a story to tell.

She has done it countless times in the media because it is always attractive that a woman who began, when she was running the Telecom social welfare office, with a tribute in the Ibagué cemetery, to the flagship duet of our country, Garzón and Collazos , follow her 82 years leading, as general, a meeting that today has more than 100 events that take place in different settings in Ibagué.
He only enjoys Colombian music, the serenades in which Muchacha de risa loca and Hurí, the Festival anthem, are sung to him.

That lady, one of the most elegant and admired in Ibagué, who has been a leader since the times when many women did not have access to so much power, is today the matron and mistress of one of the most important events of national identity.

Many think that Colombian Andean music is a matter of some departments in the interior of the country.

Which is a half truth and, why not say it, a lie, because all the music not only from the departments permeates and borrows from each other, but for almost the entire twentieth century this was the music that was taught and it was played in the most exquisite places even on the Atlantic coast.

She, with the great vision that characterizes her, has been able to bring to Ibagué, which has not been called our Musical City of Colombia for nothing, airs of the coasts, of the Llanos, of Nariño, of the Santanders that are, united, what that we Colombians are a country, as our Constitution says, multicultural, full of diverse identities. In Ibagué this time she celebrated a thunderous and happy date with Adriana Lucía, the honored artist of this 37th Festival with her joints and her vallenatos, the maestro Nicoyembre, and on previous occasions figures such as Juan Carlos Coronel and the Baranoa band, from Barranquilla.

There has been practically no great master of our music to whom homage has not been paid at this national meeting. There have not been ages, colors, origins, sounds, or genres that have not had a dignified and welcoming space in this festival of our cultural essence.

Doris Morera de Castro is the architect of everything that happens here. The ways she has achieved it are no longer told by her, but by the people who have accompanied her throughout almost four decades to achieve it. Let’s hear what they say about her strenuous but valuable work.

‘He has been the soul, brain and brawn of it all’

Alfonso Gomez Mendez
Former Minister of Justice

This house where we are, that of Doña Doris, is a house full of the musical history of Colombia. The teachers Jorge Villamil and Rafael Escalona have passed through here. She named me as president emeritus of the Musical Foundation, which is an honorary position, because emeritus are never asked anything or given balls. That is why I learned to love and admire Doris Morera. She is like the great lady of Tolima, since she was 27 she has dedicated herself to raising her daughters.

He is the person who radiates respect, sympathy. She has been like the soul, the heart, the brain and the muscles of this Foundation, which is the one that carries out the Festival. If it hadn’t been for her, it would be very difficult for her to leave, because she combines several things: she is a severe woman, strict in compliance with the rules, in a country that is so lax. But that rigidity is compatible with her gift of people. That is why it is very difficult for someone to say no. She is aware of all the details.

I am surprised to see her with her cell phone, like a teenager, organizing everything by cell phone, giving instructions, fixing everything. The only thing he doesn’t get involved in is the jury’s decisions. That is why I say that she could be a judge or a registrar of the Civil Status. She is totally impartial. That’s like my idea of Doris Morera. She directs everything. And she lives and will live for this Festival.

‘Every year teaches me’

Sandra Castro Morera
Journalist, public relations

My mom teaches me every year that this festival is held. She has been very strict and of my four brothers I think that she has demanded the most from me. We have all been relationists, and of course my mother, empirically, a journalist, a writer. This year she released her book about her memory of her Festival and I had never heard her say that I would carry on her legacy. But there she wrote that La Chiqui, “my soul mate”, I was going to continue, oh surprise ”. I began to mourn. I had a bit of doubt because I have always been a very respectful person and I only get involved where they give me the space.

‘He is the person behind every detail’

Vladimir Ardila
Member of the duet Nocturna

The figure of Mrs. Doris Morera de Castro is fundamental for Colombian music, this is a great Festival in size, in importance. Definitely the administrative and artistic management, and the support that this event gives to the musicians of Colombia is unmatched.

She is the person behind every detail, every event, with her great intelligence and administrative capacity, with that good treatment and that characteristic that Ibagué and its Music Festival have, of taking good care of its musicians, of respecting them. , to give them the value and place they deserve.

Obviously, it is Doris Morera de Castro who has done this throughout the 37 editions of the Festival. She has given her all, her life, her knowledge, her management skills. I have said it many times, I believe that our country is indebted to a person like her, who deserves all the recognition and tributes because her work is incomparable.

New Princes of the song and chosen in other categories

After almost three years of silence, the Tolima Theater returned to full capacity during the grand finale of the National Duet Princes of Song Contest, of this year’s National Colombian Music Festival in Ibagué.

The judges awarded the young “Duetorres” from Bogotá with the first prize. This group is made up of 27-year-old Julian Torres (lead voice and guitar), 22-year-old Iván Torres (second voice and treble) and 29-year-old Alexander Garzón (accompanist on bass).

All three artists have dedicated themselves to this career. Julian works as a music teacher at El Bosque University, with an emphasis in sound engineering and music production. Likewise, he is a Master’s student in Colombian Music at the same university. On the other hand, Iván is a music student at the Pontificia Universidad Javeriana, in the classical saxophone and orchestra conducting programs, and Garzón is a music teacher at the University of Cundinamarca, with an emphasis on bass.

During the event, the juries also awarded the unpublished composition Nuevo Amanecer, by Sebastián David Valdivieso from Risarald, who was accompanied in the presentation by Diego Alexander Largo and Anlly Granada Tapasco.

The young Risaraldense is a composer, author, teacher and producer, with participation and mentions in national and professional competitions. He has stood out for being the composer of the official anthem of the Pereira Bambooco Student Festival and a workshop leader for it.

The night, set by the intervention of the Santanderean trio ‘El Barbero de Socorro’, a musical ensemble that was born in Colombia in 1996. Made up of Ricardo Varela, Carlos de Lima and Edwin Castañeda.

The audience highlighted the combination of native Colombian strings —tiple and tiple requinto— and the double bass that give the trio a unique sound and the ability to express the best of Latin American acoustic music.

Finally, while the judges deliberated, the interpreter Katie James dedicated a few tenths to Tolima, inspired by her upbringing in the municipality of Icononzo. Tolima I carry you in me, is the name of the melody and lyrics that touched the soul of those who attended and accompanied her in some well-known bambucos, including Toitico well packed, with which she conquered the hearts of Colombians.
