The top 10 Russian online stores first entered the online pharmacy

The Tmall site also got into the top 10, it is part of a joint venture of the Chinese Internet giant Alibaba Group, Mail.ru Group, MegaFon and RDIF – AliExpress Russia. According to the results of 2019, the latter took the 8th place in the rating.

According to Data Insight, sales at Beru in 2019 increased by 849% to RUB 27.7 billion. Tmall showed slightly lower growth rates: revenue grew by 127% to 31 billion rubles. Apteka.ru revenue jumped 171% to 34 billion rubles.

Tmall and Beru are young fast-growing projects that were launched just recently, in 2017 and 2018, says Data Insight partner Boris Ovchinnikov.

In 2019, “Beru” ensured the growth rate by actively collecting loyal customers, connecting new partners, his representative explained. The company has invested in logistics infrastructure, marketing, and assortment expansion, he adds.

Sales growth in various categories on AliExpress Russia is due to the fact that over six months the assortment grew to 1.5 million products, and the number of Russian sellers grew to 10,000, said his representative.

And apteka.ru began to grow rapidly at the end of 2018, when regional networks also began to increase their presence on the Internet – she had to step up to secure her leadership, Ovchinnikov believes. According to him, a development strategy allowed the apteka.ru leaders: the company began to invest more actively in advertising, partnerships with other online pharmacies, introduced a more aggressive pricing policy, and improved its logistics capabilities.

The market leader, like a year ago, is Wildberries, in second place is Citylink. And in the 3rd place, for the first time, not the M.Video online store, but Ozon. In addition, a large electronics store Svyaznoy dropped out of the top ten.

The representative of M.Video-Eldorado does not agree with the Data Insight data and appeals to the group’s reporting: according to it, M.Video’s online sales in 2019 increased by 94% to 116.4 billion rubles. But the company refers to online sales, for example, purchases made in stores through sellers’ mobile devices. This is also indicated by Data Insight partner Fedor Virin: analysts and retailers have a different understanding of the term “online trading”. Data Insight does not include online sales of purchases in the store through the terminals or devices of sellers, but only those that users have issued through the Internet themselves, he explained.

Ozon’s task is to overtake the leader of the Wildberries rating or not to leave in a hopeless gap from it, Ovchinnikov believes. Ozon has great growth potential due to the launch of sales of new categories and a competitive offer: at the end of 2019, the online store entered the top three largest food sellers, he says. According to the expert, the development of delivery played an important role in the rapid growth of Ozon – for example, the emergence of postamates.

Ozon’s accelerated growth in 2019 was influenced by expanding its assortment by more than 3 times to 5 million product names and launching special services for customers (paid Ozon Premium subscription and Ozon.Card card), said Maria Ozon, Deputy General Director for Industry Relations at Ozon Zaikin. Another reason is the development of logistics facilities. In 2020, Ozon plans to continue developing logistics, financial products and expanding its assortment, as well as providing SMEs with tools for sales growth – a marketplace, an advertising platform and analytical tools, special financing programs from Ozon.Invest.

M.Video and Svyaznoy, like other players in the electronics market, are hostages of the fact that this segment is no longer growing offline and cannot grow rapidly on the Internet, Ovchinnikov believes: most of the sales are already online.

In 2020, it was assumed that the growth rate of the online trading market will be more than 30%, but due to the current situation, including due to the coronavirus, exact figures cannot be given now, Ovchinnikov noted.
