The inhabitants of North America began to use tobacco about 12 thousand years ago, and not three thousand years ago, as previously thought.
American archaeologists from the Far West Anthropological Research Group excavated a hunter-gatherer site in Utah, and discovered charred tobacco seeds that are believed to have been used for chewing. An article about this was published in the journal Nature Human Behavior. LiveScience.
It is noted that the site is about 12,300 years old. This suggests that the indigenous people of North America began using tobacco nine thousand years earlier than previously thought.
As you know, the tradition of smoking and chewing tobacco originated among the peoples of America, and then spread throughout the world. The earliest tobacco-bearing pipes found in the southeastern United States are 3,300 years old. At the same time, scientists admit that the artifacts rather indicate the time of the manufacture of special devices for smoking, and the beginning of its use could have occurred much earlier.
Excavations took place at the Wishbone site, located in the Great Salt Lake Desert. Charred wood, animal bones, and spearheads for hunting big game were found in the parking lot. All this led scientists to the conclusion that the ancient people did not use tobacco as fuel and did not eat it.
It is assumed that they chewed the grains of tobacco, as some Indian tribes still do today.
The grains found by archaeologists belong to wild varieties of tobacco. This indicates that people used tobacco for thousands of years before they learned to cultivate it.
