Christian Bräuer, CEO of the AG Kino-Gilde: “The time has come for a resilient reopening strategy. The advance from Schleswig-Holstein is therefore an important first impulse. However, a step-by-step plan for the reopening must recognize the role of culture in society and the freedom of art, as well as the fact that the cultural areas have proven to be particularly safe places with consistently implemented hygiene concepts. Spatial conditions, ventilation systems and contact tracking make cinemas far safer places than other everyday spaces. This is not only shown by the experiences from the reopening in the summer, but also by numerous scientific studies – among others by the TU Berlin or the Fraunhofer Heinrich Hertz Institute. “
Provided that the positive development of the infection process continues and the pandemic remains controllable even with mutations, the reopening of the cinemas in good time before Easter would be a responsible signal. After more than five months of lockdown, this would give the cinemas and the entire industry the ability to plan that they need as a nationally functioning sector and enable a safe cultural operation under certain conditions. And thanks to the Oscars at the end of April, film enthusiasts can look forward to excellent and already award-winning films.
It is crucial that the announced funding programs take effect soon and that the recovery of the entire market is promoted with a sustainable strategy in order to preserve the cinema as a cultural location and the diversity of films. Culture cannot be dispensed with, it is an important cornerstone of a society. “
