the threshold of intensive care that triggers it- Corriere.it

Closure of non-essential activities and prohibition of movement between Regions: these are the measures being studied by the government if the rules already contained in the Dpcm of October 18 and the ordinances issued in these hours by the Regions will not stop the rise of the epidemiological curve. The executive chooses to proceed gradually with a stated goal: to keep production activities and schools open. But if the number of new positives from Covid and above all that of hospitalized patients will continue to increase rapidly as in these days, it seems obvious that other progressive closures should be carried out, if not even a new lockdown. Palazzo Chigi currently excludes it, even if a threshold has been set within the executive: 2,300 people in intensive care. this is the level of alarm that could trigger drastic measures.

The Rt

So we proceed in concert with the governors, we collaborate to follow a common strategy, moving on the basis of the Rt index of the various areas. Fundamental to decide how and where to intervene will be the monitoring of the Higher Institute of Health which will arrive today, at the latest tomorrow. And it will provide an updated picture of the situation. The Minister of Health Roberto Speranza and that of Regional Affairs Francesco Boccia negotiate with the Regions, they work together to make the measures homogeneous throughout Italy. Aware that what has been decided so far – including the mandatory use of masks – outdoors and indoors and the curfew from 11pm or midnight – may not be enough to avoid the worst. The ISS study on crisis scenarios has already identified the highest level, the worst, in three consecutive weeks of Rt above 1.5.

The maximum threshold

The strong concern concerns hospitals. Because it is true that many health facilities are holding up, but others are in trouble, places are beginning to run out in some cities. And compared to last spring, the average age of those with severe symptoms has dropped. Yesterday there were 926 people admitted to intensive care. A week ago, on October 14, there were about half, 539. this is the alarming data and interventions are being modulated on this. With the conviction that more than 2,300 people in serious conditions the system risks collapsing.
