Bloodied soldiers are trying to restore order in the streets of Beirut after a massive explosion in which more than 50 people were killed and at least 2,700 injured, according to a video posted on Twitter on Tuesday by Al-Arabij TV.
A few hours after the explosion, ambulances are still taking the wounded, some of the injured are still on the ground in the port. According to the representative of the civil defense, the bodies of the dead are still under the rubble.
Helicopters participating in extinguishing the fire fly over the site of the explosion. Helicopters dump water where the fire is still burning. The streets are full of windows, building fragments and car wrecks.
The film shows hundreds of people running erratically through the streets that still have smoke from the explosion in the port. Dust-covered passersby help to carry those who suffered the most in the explosion – you can see blind people who are covered in blood.
Hear fireman’s sirens, ambulances and people shouting over each other looking for cars to transport the wounded.
The cause of the explosion is still unknown. Head of the General Security Directorate Abbas Ibrahim said it may have been highly explosive material confiscated from the ship some time ago and stored at the port. Local LBC television said it could have been sodium nitrate, the AP agency reports.
