The supermarket that sells the fruit and vegetables you grow on your roof

Food retail, increasingly allied with sustainability and innovation, advances with proposals like the one we present to you now: the supermarket that sells the fruit and vegetables that it grows on its roof.

We are talking about the Canadian brand IGA Duchemin which has developed this initiative with great success in the city of Montreal. Specifically, it is an orchard that exceeds 2,300 square meters of surface located, as you can see in this video, on the roof of the building, without a doubt a good way to take advantage of this surface.

“The green roof garden allows us not only to cultivate our passion for food, but also to do everything with the greatest concern for the environment, an aspect that is particularly close to our hearts. We are happy to carry out this innovative project and hope it can inspire other companies to follow suit, “explains the company.

In fact, the project is the first of its kind in this country. Thanks to this idea, the brand offers its clients about thirty varieties of organic fruits and vegetables (lettuce, tomatoes, herbs, aubergines …).

As highlighted by various media, to carry out this large-scale project, the company partnered with the Green Line producers, specialized in ‘living roofs’ and who already had experience in urban agriculture.

A CHALLENGE

The initiative has had few challenges. And is that the green roof has a floor of only 15 cm thick, so fertilization has been a challenge. An agronomist developed a suitable plan to establish the most suitable conditions, taking into account the wind and heat.

The compost production avoid buying early in the season. Likewise, the roof also houses beehives that allow the sale of about 200 kg of honey at the end of September in the supermarket.
