The Story of Liu Xuezhou, Chinese Teenager Sold by Parents as a Baby, Rejected After Meeting Again to Suicide

BEIJING, KOMPAS.com – A Chinese teenager who was sold by his parents as a baby, and reportedly rejected by them after a recent reunion, is found dead.

His story has shaken China and sparked an outpouring of sympathy.

The 17-year-old first came to national attention in China after he posted a video asking for help finding his biological family.

According to media reports, Liu was sold by his biological parents in 2005 and brought in by another family.

However, his adoptive parents later died in an accident.

He spent most of his life with his grandparents and other relatives.

In December last year, the 17-year-old managed to track down his biological parents, who have divorced and remarried, after he started an online search.

Liu said on social media that it was a happy reunion at first.

But things changed after he reportedly claimed he needed financial help.

Liu Xuezhou said that she had asked her parents if she could live with them, or to buy or rent a house for her because she did not have a house of her own.

However, according to him, his biological parents ignored him again. His mother even blocked him on the messaging platform WeChat.

His parents denied this. Her mother said Liu tried to force her to buy her a house, which she couldn’t afford.

Liu later said he would sue his biological parents for neglect.

In a Weibo post, Liu said he would “see them in court”.

The teenager was later reported to have been bullied online. Many say that he just wants a home from his parents, and that he is trying to gain sympathy.

Just after midnight on Monday (1/24/2022), Liu uploaded a long essay on Weibo. It details the events of his life and how he was attacked online.

“I have endured being called by many names,” she said, saying she had been “abandoned twice” by her birth parents.

On the last line of his note, he said that he was “ending my life”.

The post sparked frantic comments urging him not to take his own life, and asking those around him to find him.

His aunt later confirmed his death with local media, who said he was found hours after the notes were published, and rushed to hospital where he died in the early hours of Monday (24/1/2022).

Liu’s Weibo page has since been flooded with sympathetic comments, with many expressing anger at the perpetrators cyber bullying.

“The cyberbullying he is experiencing is too much for adults to bear, let alone children,” said one user.

Others said they hoped he would find a good family “in the next life”.

“I hope in your next life you find parents who protect you, brothers who love you and live a life without worries.”
