Nothing is scanned in this store and there are no cash registers. Customers come out with full bags

German retailer Aldi is testing the market in London with a new type of supermarket in which there are no cash registers at all, the company said in a statement.

The new pilot store is open on Greenwich High Street din Londra and allows customers to complete their purchases without scanning any products and without having to stop by the cash register.

How to shop, actually

This is possible thanks to an application of the Aldi Shop & Go chain of stores, which customers must download in order to enter the store and leave after completing their purchases, without going to any cash register.

The application works in tandem with the video camera system provided by the technology company AiFi which films the customer when he takes products from the shelf. In this way, once the customer leaves the store, his purchases will be charged automatically by the payment method selected by him, and a receipt will appear in the application.

What happens to customers who buy alcohol

For those who want to buy alcohol or other products that cannot be sold to minors, it will be possible to use facial aging technology to authorize the purchase.

The new technology, provided by Yoti, allows buyers to confirm their age in seconds through the Aldi Shop & Go app. Those who do not want to use the system will instead be checked for age by a person in the store.

This store uses state-of-the-art retail technology, offering customers Aldi’s award-winning products and unbeatable prices in a new and innovative way. The team is thrilled to see customers come and experience Aldi Shop & Go, ”said Giles Hurley, CEO of Aldi UK and Ireland.
