The state parliament of Thuringia elects the new judges of the Constitutional Court

The state parliament of Thuringia has elected six judges for the Constitutional Court. The necessary two-thirds majority was obtained by Lars Schmidt, judge at the Erfurt district court, Jens Petermann, judge at the Gotha social court, Jörg Geibert, Berlin lawyer, Barbara Burkert, judge at the Mühlhausen district court, Christoph Ohler, professor at the Friedrich Schiller University in Jena, and Renate Wittmann, judge at the Nuremberg Labor Court.

The elections were necessary because the term of some judges will expire after seven years. The parliamentary groups of the Left, SPD, Greens and CDU had previously agreed on the electoral proposals. The college is made up of nine judges. In addition, Lars Schmidt was elected Vice-President of the Constitutional Court. The Constitutional Court is presided over by President Klaus-Dieter von der Weiden.
