The Saudi crown prince invited to the queen’s funeral will likely not attend

A source quoted by the “Reuters” news agency claims that these changes have come about thanks to the people of Saudi Arabia.

Human rights groups have criticized Britain’s decision to invite the crown prince, who is the de facto ruler of Saudi Arabia, to the funeral.

Western intelligence accused Mohammed bin Salman of ordering the 2018 assassination of Saudi journalist Jamal Khashoggi. The crown prince himself denies the accusation.

Sources close to the Saudi embassy had previously confirmed that the crown prince would visit London this weekend. However, Prince Turki al-Faisal, another high-ranking Saudi prince, is expected to attend the funeral instead of him, a British Foreign Office source said.

Controversy has also been raised by Britain’s decision to invite a Chinese representative to the queen’s funeral, knowing how Beijing has treated Muslim Uyghurs in the Xinjiang region of western China. China has confirmed that Vice President Wang Qishan will attend her funeral.

The Queen will be honored Monday at Britain’s first state funeral in nearly sixty years. Over 2,000 invited guests are expected to attend the funeral ceremony at Westminster Abbey.

About 500 foreign leaders will attend the funeral. Together with US President Joe Biden, French President Emmanuel Macron, New Zealand Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern and representatives of European royal families, Olena Zelensky, wife of Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky, European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen and the European Council President Charles Michel will be in attendance.

Invitations to the queen’s funeral were not received from Russia, Belarus and Myanmar, as well as from Venezuela and Syria, which do not have full diplomatic relations with Britain. Also, due to the political situation, there will be no representative of Afghanistan at the funeral, reports the “Telegraph” newspaper.

The queen, 96, died last Thursday at Balmoral Estate in Scotland. After her death, her eldest son Charles inherited the throne.
