The Roberto Plasencia Saldaña Bicentennial Theater presents a tribute to Daniel Catán, the composer who brought opera in Spanish to the world

The Roberto Plasencia Saldaña Bicentennial Theater, from the Guanajuato Cultural Forum, presents the concert “Tribute to Daniel Catán”, Made up of arias from his most famous operas, such as: Florence in the Amazon, Il Postino, Salsipuedes and Rappaccini’s daughter, performed by the sopranos Angélica Alejandre and Jésikka Arévalo; the mezzo-soprano Alejandra Gómez; the tenor Dante Alcalá, the baritone Tomás Castellanos and the pianist Andrés Sarre, on Saturday August 14 at 7:00 p.m., in the Main Hall of the Roberto Plasencia Saldaña Bicentennial Theater.

Daniel Catán Born in Mexico, he studied philosophy at the University of Sussex in England before enrolling at Princeton as a doctoral student in composition under the tutelage of Milton Babbitt, James Randall, and Benjamin Boretz. His compositions have a lyrical and romantic style that is particularly well suited to the human voice.. Lush orchestrations reminiscent of Debussy and Strauss, along with Latin American instruments and rhythms, are regularly heard in their music.

His opera Florence in the Amazon it has the distinction of being the first opera in Spanish commissioned by a major American company. The success of this opera led to the commission of Salsipuedes for the Houston Grand Opera. His fourth opera, The postman, was commissioned by Los Angeles Opera and premiered in Los Angeles, Vienna and Paris in 2011, with Plácido Domingo.

At the time of his death, Daniel Catán was working on his next opera, Meet John Doe.

The sopranos will participate in this recital Angelica Alejandre, graduated from the Fine Arts Opera Studio, and winner in 2009 of the first place in the Maritza Alemán singing contest; Jésikka Arevalo originally from Guatemala, winner of the second place, of the Second International Singing Contest Sinaloa 2010 and the mezzo-soprano Alejandra Gomez Graduated from the Superior School of Dance and Music of Monterrey, and the Academy of Vocal Arts of Philadelphia. Winner of the Second Prize in a Montreal Contest of the Canadian ICAV program. His most prominent opera roles include Carmen, by Bizet, and Charlotte en Werther, by Massenet.

In addition, the tenor will participate Dante Alcala, originally from the City of Guadalajara, Jalisco. He made his debut at the Palacio de Bellas Artes in 2000 and since then, he has participated in more than 30 operatic titles within the Mexican Republic and around the world; the baritone Tomás Castellanos from Guadalajara, Jalisco. He began his studies at the Madrid Musical Theater Academy in Guadalajara. He has participated in more than 30 performances between theater, ballet, opera, operetta, zarzuela concert and musical theater, all accompanied by the pianist Andres Sarre Possessing a vast knowledge of singing and interpretation styles, he is a frequent guest as a piano accompanist in recitals of many Mexican singers and singing students, in addition to having collaborated with internationally renowned artists.

The program they will perform is made up of arias from Daniel Catán’s most famous operas, such as Florence in the Amazon, Il Postino, Salsipuedes and Rappaccini’s daughter.
