The area on the Rhine with its center in what is now Rhineland-Palatinate has been the political, economic and cultural center of Europe for centuries. The mighty cathedrals of Mainz, Worms and Speyer once stood here alongside Jewish Talmud schools and synagogues over a distance of only 100 kilometers.
As the chronicler Otto von Freising wrote in the 12th century, the “greatest power of the empire” lay on the Rhine.
The Mainz state exhibition “The emperors and the pillars of their power” is dedicated to the network of relationships in this special region.
