The regions of Groningen and Twente are sounding alarms: the blackest scenario is looming

“The need is unprecedented,” writes Groningen mayor Koen Schuiling. The regions of Groningen and Twente are facing a rapidly increasing number of corona infections. At the same time, absenteeism among staff of nursing and care homes and in care for the disabled is increasing rapidly.


The pressure on healthcare is high and extra support is therefore urgently needed in the two regions. “I make an urgent appeal to you to provide this support at very short notice,” said Schuiling.

In recent days, other regions have already raised the alarm about the situation in healthcare institutions. The North and East Gelderland region already spoke last week of a ‘very worrying and worrying situation’ due to the sharp increase in the number of infections.


The cry for help has indeed reached The Hague, confirms a spokesman for the Ministry of Defense. In consultation with the Ministry of Health, we are looking into the possibilities of aid. The request from the regions of Groningen and Twente will also be discussed in the Security Council tomorrow evening.

The army jumped in at the beginning of November when twenty extra-large test streets were set up at a rapid pace. Those test streets then became temporarily manned by soldiers. At the start of the pandemic, the military also ceased with it transporting corona patients.
