The referee who annulled Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal when Portugal vs Serbia was fired!

Mario Diks was excluded from participation in Euro 2020 because he was wrongly considered to have annulled Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal when Portugal faced Serbia.

Mario Diks, the assistant referee who decided to cancel Cristiano Ronaldo’s goal against Serbia because he was deemed not to cross the goal line, has been fired from his participation at Euro 2020.

Ronaldo had to find his late-match winner rejected by the assistant referee, with the 2020 World Cup qualifier between Portugal and Serbia ending equally strong, 2-2.

The referee who officiated the match, Danny Makkelie, made an open apology for the mistake after the match. Now, he has also kicked Diks from his team ahead of the European Championship next summer.

What happened?

Ronaldo made the finish with a kick first-time after running after Nuno Mendes’ cross at the end of the match against Serbia. From replays, the ball had crossed the goal line before Aleksandar Mitrovic hurriedly dispelled the round skin.

The Portuguese forward was shown a yellow card for his protests and then walked off the pitch before the referee blew the long whistle, throwing the captain’s armband as he walked into the stadium hallway.

How did Diks respond?

Diks confirmed his regret for Omrop Fryslan, while expressing his frustration over the final decision he made after years of serving as a court court including appearing in the Europa League final and semi-finals of last season’s Club World Cup.

“This is very, very disappointing for me because I have been very close to the European Championship,” he said.

“Wednesday, March 31, I heard from Makkelie that he wanted to continue with other assistants, because there was no confidence in the cooperation that we had built,” he explained.

“I really hope for a lot more support, understanding and trust after working together for many years,” he added.

Makkelie bilang apa?

Makkelie revealed that Jan de Vries had been recruited to replace Diks in his team. However, he was reluctant to talk further when asked for certainty whether Diks was fired because of his mistake in Portugal’s match against Serbia.

“It is true that Jan de Vries has taken over Mario Diks’ position in the team,” explained Makkelie Omrop Fryslan.

“This is a team problem. Out of respect for Mario, but also because of the interests of the team. We are not making any statements about the reasons for this change,” he said.
