New success on Netflix, the Baby Bandito series is inspired by the story of a real criminal, author of the heist of the century in Chile. What happened to Kevin Olguín Sepulveda?
This is the new Hispanic series that is causing a sensation on Netflix. Number 3 on the platform, Baby Bandito is a Chilean fiction that brings back good memories to fans of La Casa de Papel with colorful characters, an exceptional heist and breathtaking twists and turns.
Produced by Pablo Larraín (Neruda, Jackie, Spencer, The Count) and created by Valeria Hofmann, Diego Muñoz (Neruda, The Count) and Juan Andrés Rivera, this Chilean fiction in 8 episodes tells how an extraordinary heist turns the life of a teenager called Kevin Tapia, played by Nicolás Contreras.
To help his struggling mother and impress his new girlfriend Genesis (Francisca Armstrong), Kevin steals a detailed plan of the century heist of a shipment of cash at Santiago airport from thugs.
In his crime, which leads him to live on the run, he involves his girlfriend, his best friend Panda (Lukas Vergara), the criminal Mistica (Carmen Zabala) and the bandit Pantera (Pablo Macaya), his father’s former sidekick .
Behind the Baby Bandito series, a real criminal!
You should know that Baby Bandito is based on real events! One of Chile’s biggest heists: $15 million stolen by a gang at Santiago airport in 2014. According to the BBC, half a dozen armed men stole a Brinks armored vehicle.
The Chilean police estimated that the gang had obtained “valuable information” to establish such a precise robbery plan in order to steal this enormous sum of money from abroad and which was to be routed to Chilean banks.

And the character of Kevin Tapia in the series Baby Bandito is inspired by a real criminal: Kevin Olguín Sepulveda. The latter was at the head of the gang which orchestrated the heist of the century. He was 21 years old at the time.
After this heist, the police carried out an in-depth investigation given the seriousness of the events which shocked the entire country. Several members of the group were arrested in the following years and a small portion of the stolen money (around 10%) was recovered.
The other members of the arrested group received prison sentences ranging from 3 to 10 years for assault, robbery with intimidation and illegal possession of weapons, among others. The only one to be acquitted in this case is Fabian Olguín, Kevin’s brother, because investigators failed to gather enough evidence to link him to the heist.
A life of luxury… and 4 years in prison
For his part, Kevin Olguín Sepulveda, nicknamed “Baby Bandito” by the European press, managed to escape and lead a luxurious life between France, Italy and Spain which he does not hesitate to flaunt on social networks.

As TheCinemaholic explains, Kevin, now a much-wanted fugitive, is finally spotted in Barcelona, Spain and arrested while committing a burglary with other criminals. He is then extradited.
On his return to Chile, he was sentenced to 4 years in prison. Released with non-custodial precautionary measures before his sentence is pronounced, Kevin takes the opportunity to escape. He would not be captured until 2018, two years after his extradition, to finally serve his sentence.
He will be released a little earlier, before being arrested again in 2021 for the theft of a truck transporting cigarettes. He will not be sentenced to prison for this offense, committed only a few months after his release.
But it seems that Kevin is still a criminal since he is currently in prison according to the Italian media TODAY.
