“I have been a holder for three years after a year of internship. Currently, I turn around 2,000 to 2,200 euros net per month thanks to the homework help that I offer in the evening and a bonus of 150 euros that I receive because I teach in REP [réseau d’éducation prioritaire]. Without that, it would have been complicated, especially to pay the costs if my car breaks down: I live in the Oise and I drive 100 kilometers every day. It’s painful, but my salary does not allow me to live in Seine-Saint-Denis, where you have to count at least 800 euros per month to rent a decent one-bedroom apartment. Since I started, I must have taken advantage of an increase of 400 euros per month, but I know that I will stagnate for a long time at my current salary, since I have a friend who has been teaching for ten years who is just earning 200 euros more than me. With two dependent young children, my wife and I have to be careful to be able to pay our 1000 euros of credit per month for our house. Beyond the salary issues, I have had to pay many times for materials out of my pocket, such as ink for printers or even pencil cases and pens for students who did not have them. “

“It’s my thirtieth return to school. I earn 3,100 euros net per month for a full-time job – I am at the bottom rung, called hors classe. It’s comfortable at the end of your career. Your children are grown up, they sometimes earn their own money, and you work faster, you have “broken in” in a way. But during the first years, the salaries are too fair to make people want to do this job. So yes, we need a more attractive salary for young people, but Hidalgo’s speech should not be reduced to that. Otherwise we will still pass for lazy people who want value for their money. The real question is, what do we do with education? Teachers lack resources and support, especially psychological. We are alone in front of our classes. “I’m starting my first school year as a replacement holder, with a first salary of 1,660 euros net. Compared to the people I know who have also trained in mathematics, mine is obviously less. I think anyone who has obtained a master’s degree should start their career with an honest threshold of 2,000 euros. Below, it’s still a bit light. Especially since the first years as a teacher are really not easy: shared between two establishments, I have a long way to go, there are many hours of preparation, the salary is therefore not huge compared to at working time. I think it will get better in the years to come, once my classes are ready and I have a permanent establishment. Until then, I still manage to live because I was lucky to be helped by my parents, who paid me for my car, for example. But this is clearly not the case for everyone.
