The Prosecutorial College of the Supreme Judicial Council expresses its concern and indignation at the unceremonious violation of the rule of law, carried out with the political declaration of some 47 MPs from the 47th National Assembly announced on January 14, 2022.

We accept the call for the resignation of Ivan Geshev, as Prosecutor General, for a clear example of another gross and inadmissible violation of the independence of the judiciary.

This is stated in the opinion of the Prosecutorial Board of the SJC on the declaration of the ruling coalition and the parliamentary groups “We continue the change”, “BSP for Bulgaria”, “There is such a people” and “Democratic Bulgaria”, which called on Ivan Geshev to resign. .

It was read from the rostrum of the National Assembly by the head of the parliamentary group of “We continue the change” Andrei Gyurov. This happened on the day when the head of the Supreme Court of Cassation was elected.

“The announcement of the declaration immediately before the Plenary Session of the Supreme Judicial Council for the election of the President of the Supreme Court of Cassation is a clear sign of the tone imposed by the ruling majority in relations with the judiciary,” the statement said.

“Such actions are an expression of the desire to divert attention from particularly important public issues, so they are unacceptable and violate the principles of separation of powers and the rule of law,” the college said.

The opinion will be sent to the Speaker of the National Assembly, the President, the Prime Minister, the Representation of the European Commission, the Embassies of the Member States of the European Union, the US Embassy, the British Embassy, the European Parliament, the Council of Europe, the Venice Commission and the Advisory Council. prosecutors, the International Association of Prosecutors, the European Network of Judicial Councils, the GRECO Commission and the European Attorney General.
