The professional hand is hunting plastic bottles

Who has already let his gaze drag in the direction of a sideline has inevitably made the observation: dozens of bottles of water are consumed in each match. And the same principle applies to training sessions, the number of which is even higher. “We did the math, for D1 and D2, we arrive at nearly 200,000 plastic bottles used each season. Couldn’t we replace them with a few hundred gourds ?? ”

At C’Chartres MHB, all players equipped with a water bottle

This proposal, full of common sense, comes from the former captain of Chartres Robin Molinié. Supported by a phalanx of professional players, including Nikola Karabatic, the left-back of Créteil went on a crusade to raise awareness among those involved in his sport on this ecological theme. His ideas found a receptacle in the union of professional players, the AJPH, and an eco-responsible movement, supported by the authorities, was thus created. Its name: green zone.

It’s an aberration that pros still use plastic bottles in matches and training. We must drive change and it must come from us, handball players and citizens, because it will not necessarily come from our leaders.

“It is important that the players get involved and show the example to our licensees”, explains Nikola Karabatic, himself a gourd convert, in a small awareness video. “Everyone has to get started, it is an aberration that the pros still use plastic bottles in matches and in training,” continues the French handball star. We must drive change and it must come from us, handball players and citizens, because it will not necessarily come from our leaders. If half of the licensees get involved, it represents millions of bottles of water, it’s impressive. “

Chartres wins over the gong in Aix-en-Provence

A charter was drawn up by the instigators of the movement in order to engage professional handball on a more virtuous path in this area. About twenty clubs have already signed it, including Chartres. This season, the CCMHB has equipped all members of its workforce with branded water bottles. For the record, they are provided by the company of the captain, Zacharia N’Diaye.

A few use the gourds, but we still buy a lot of water. We ordered two pallets this season. The problem is that the gourds are quickly dirty with the glue …

“A water fountain is in service so that the players can fill them”, indicates the president of the club, Steeve Baron. But now, we do not chase old habits with a snap of the fingers… “Some people use gourds, but we still buy a lot of water, recognizes the leader of Chartres. We ordered two pallets this season. The problem is that the gourds are quickly dirty with the glue… ”

Smaller bottles

Failing to go immediately to zero plastic, the club intends to limit its consumption. This is why he will now order smaller bottles than the classic 1.5 liter. “We realized that we were throwing a lot of water, justifies Steeve Baron. I hope we will soon be able to stop using bottles. These initiatives are going in the right direction. “

Jukic’s missile, already one of the goals of the year

In the eyes of Robin Molinié, some leaders must take matters into their own hands: “If two or three players per club show the example, the others will follow. These are simple actions, little efforts that cost nothing. But all this put together, these are great things at the finish.
