Riga, Sept. 16, LETA. On September 30, the Latvian Puppet Theater will have its premiere of the production “Death in the Shadow” based on the short story of the writer Rūdolfs Blaumanis, the theater representative Rūta Petrauska informed LETA.

The graduation of the Puppet Theater Art Course of the Latvian Academy of Culture (LAC) in 2019, Latvian Puppet Theater actors – Elīna Bojarkina, Rihards Zelezņevs and Matīss Millers under the supervision of their classmate Rūdolfs Apse, who continues their studies .

The theater said that Apse spends part of his studies in Poland, which can be considered a contemporary puppet theater superpower, supplementing his knowledge at the Białystok branch of the Alexander Theater Academy in Warsaw, studying puppetry and alternative theater directing.

The director pointed out that the performance is designed as a collage of different directions and theatrical disciplines. Elements of object theater, symbolism theater and visual theater, the tradition of Bertolt Brecht’s acting play together with the methods of Saintford Maizner, various audiovisual media, as well as ritual and trance experience have been used in the creation process. “There is no single leading image in it, everyone involved is equally responsible for what is happening, just like in provocative situations,” Apse emphasized.

According to Petrauskas, in the show the young theater artists explore a person’s ability to overcome an existential stage of life, mobilizing internal resources so as not to give themselves captive to traumatic experiences. “Death in the Shadow” is a production about the relationships of people affected by a border situation.

“Death in the Shadow” will complement the section of the Latvian Puppet Theater’s repertoire, which is intended for adult audiences and currently includes performances “Kazanova” and “Zelta zirgs” – the last of which viewers will also be able to see “LTV1” in the .

Petrauska noted that by attracting guest directors from abroad and cooperating with young directing professionals from home, it is planned to offer at least one performance to the audience each season, which uses puppet, object and visual theater as a language for conversation with adults rather than children.
