The sales director of HKScan Latvia revealed that the manufacturer currently has eight active markets in Europe, to which products manufactured in Latvia are exported. The number of customers in these markets is growing every year. He noted that exports to Croatia, Poland, Romania and the Czech Republic have also recently started.

Lapiņš pointed out that it is currently difficult to comment on how much the overall export market of the producer has been affected by the situation of Covid-19.

HKScan Latvia is aware that in order for a company to be a successful manufacturer in Latvia, it is necessary to develop exports. “The local market is getting smaller and smaller every year, also for one reason that the population of Latvia decreases by 15,000-20,000 every year. Every other year, one Valmiera from Latvia disappears. Also in the demographic situation we reach new ones every year. “If you want to be a successful producer in another ten or fifteen years, then you need to export,” explained Lapins.

According to Lapins, the company exports products under various brands, including private labels, with partner brands. “With such well-known brands in Latvia as” Rīgas miesnieks “,” Rakvere “or” Jelgava “, we are more available in the export markets where our compatriots are – in Ireland and Great Britain. In Central Europe and Scandinavia we are looking for brands that are known to local consumers. Hardly anyone in Germany would know the products of “Riga Butcher” and understand this brand, “he revealed.

The representative of the meat producer was proud that, for example, almost every supermarket in Germany sells a HKScan Latvia product made in Jelgava. He added that the German market is very large and interesting, the country has a population of 80 million, so everyone wants to break into the German market. Competition for the world’s fourth strongest economy is very fierce and difficult. If a Latvian manufacturer enters this market, it is a great success story and it has great potential, Lapiņš admitted.

It was reported that HKScan Latvia’s turnover last year was 43.414 million euros, which is 12.4% more than a year earlier, while the company’s loss was 394,342 euros, compared to the profit a year earlier.

HKScan Latvia was founded in 1992, and since 1998 the company has been part of the HKScan group. The share capital of the company is 2.214 million euros. HKScan is one of the largest food companies in the Nordic countries and includes meat processing companies in Finland, Sweden, Denmark and the Baltic countries.
