The price of coal is getting lower
The price of coal in June 2023 maintains a downward trend. Coal in the world is the cheapest for over a year, even by 80%. In ARA ports, coal costs approx. PLN 356 per ton. The price of coal in Poland is also going down. At PGG, you pay for coal from PLN 1,420 per ton. What are the prices of coal in warehouses and in supermarkets?

Coal distribution by municipalities and intermediary coal entities – under the Act on preferential purchase – resulted in a significant reduction in prices offered on the market by private entities from 4-3.5 thousand PLN per ton to approx. PLN 2,000 per ton. Today, coal is available at more decent prices.
A ton of coal – price 2023 in Poland
Let us remind you that since 2021 coal has become even more expensive 400%from the level PLN 800-1000 per ton up to PLN 3000-4000 and more. Already from mid-2022 the price of eco-pea coal jumped to an average of PLN 3,000 per ton. Moreover, the availability of heating coal was very limited. And the average house needs 3 to 5 tons of coal for the winter.
At the very end of 2022 and the beginning of 2023, coal prices began to fall.
What is the price of coal in June in supermarkets?
Coal prices are the highest in supermarkets. For example:
- in Castorama eco-pea coal or walnut coal cost about PLN 42-45 for a 20-kilogram bag,
- in Leroy-Merlin, you have to pay PLN 52 for eco-pea coal in a 25 kg bag, PLN 40 for nut coal in a 20 kg bag,
- At OBI eco-peas in a 20 kg bag costs PLN 40, a ton of bagged peas costs PLN 2,000. Walnut charcoal is also available for the same price.
How much do you pay for coal in warehouses?
– Within a few weeks, the price of coal in private warehouses fell from over PLN 3,500 per ton to the price level at which coal is offered by local governments, i.e. PLN 2,000 per ton – informed in January Deputy Minister of Assets Karol Rabenda. Government intervention in the market was effective. A kind of price speculation (…) caused by too little supply has ended – he added.
According to the estimates of the Ministry of State Assets, at the moment, communes have about 1% of the entire delivered volume. Local governments that have not yet sold all the coal will be able to do so after the end of the heating season. The possibility of submission has been extended to residents application for the purchase of coal until June 30, 2023. In turn, municipalities can sell coal until July 31, 2023.
– The current heating season has just come to an end. However, it is worth thinking about another one now – Karol Rabenda announced in April at a conference summarizing coal sales by municipalities. Residents will be able to buy additional coal without quantitative restrictions, regardless of whether they have already purchased the raw material in the amount provided for in the previous act.
Currently, municipalities that still have coal offer it at prices lower than PLN 2,000.
Coal price in PGG
In the online store for individual customers Polish Mining Group – the largest Polish producer of coal – various types of coal and eco-pea coal are offered, as well as fine coal. The price of coal here is quite affordable. And attention, coal is on sale all the time.
Coal prices from the PGG e-shop website on June 2, 2023:
- Pieklorz, Karlik Eco-pea coal – 1520 PLN/ton
- Walnut, Cube – 1470 PLN/ton
- Peas – 1420 PLN/ton.
On May 4, the company launched a promotion for the sale of coal, thanks to which you can save on the purchase of coal, and at the same time make a reserve for the next heating season, because no one really knows what the availability of coal and its prices will be in autumn. – We encourage you to stock up on coal in the spring and summer to avoid the trouble we remember from last year – said Tomasz Rogala, President of the Polish Mining Group, during the Forum of the Ministry of State Assets, which took place at the end of April.
Eco-pea coal with a lower price in Tauron
Until recently, the price of eco-pea coal in Tauron was approx. PLN 2,000/t. Currently, eco-pea coal costs about PLN 200 less per ton. For JARET plus eco-pea coal, you have to pay PLN 1,439 for 800 kg (40×20 kg pallet), for TAURON Ekogroszek – PLN 1,479 for 800 kg (40×20 kg pallet), for JARET plus® BIG BAG eco-pea coal – PLN 1,798.75 per ton.
Coal price in the world – ARA quotes
At ARA ports, a ton of coal costs $87.45 (closes June 1), that is around PLN 365. Just a month ago (May 4) a ton of coal cost USD 128, i.e. PLN 529 per ton. As you can see, we are on a downward trend all the time.
