“The President’s strength is moral, it is not a force of contagion”

On Monday, the health authorities of the Government of Mexico ruled out carrying out the coronavirus to the country’s president, Andrés Manuel López Obrador, because to do so “would not have any scientific logic.”

“It is useless to know if it is positive or negative because the medical care of a person with COVID-19 is exactly the same whether it is known that they have or that they do not have the virus,” said Undersecretary for Prevention and Health Promotion, Hugo López -Gatell.

According to the latest official report, in Mexico there are 53 confirmed cases of coronavirus and 176 suspected cases.

At a press conference at the National Palace with López Obrador, the senior official and doctor of epidemiology argued that the idea that the president has to be tested “is a completely misplaced view in scientific terms.”

López-Gatell said that the head of state “fortunately enjoys good health” and despite his 66 years of age “is not a person of special risk.”

“It would almost be better if he had coronavirus because the most likely thing is that he is going to recover and he is going to be immune and no one would have this concern in him anymore,” the official said.

The Undersecretary of Health responded like this after the president was asked by the press about whether he was willing to take the test, since this weekend he toured several events where he hugged and kissed many people.

– “If you became a carrier and went to the highly marginalized areas, could you spread it?” Asked a journalist.
– “The strength of the President is moral, not a force of contagion. In terms of a person, an individual, the president has the same probability of infecting you or me, “said López-Gatell.

During the morning press conference of President López Obrador, the Undersecretary of Health also defended the right to privacy of the President of Mexico.

“From a technical point of view, the President has two connotations, the first is that he is a person and as a person he must be respected, just like everyone else, his privacy rights, nobody has to be harassing Mr. Andrés Manuel López Obrador as person, that is his privacy and he has his right.

“Second, there is a technical connotation, it goes beyond the medical, part of public health, caring for the head of state, as well as other strategic personnel, and that is our responsibility, but the mechanisms are not to make general recommendations to land the President. Fortunately, he is in good health, and although he is 60 years old, it does not mean that he is a person of special risk. ”

“I comply with the health protocol, but the question is very good because if it is necessary, then, I take the coronavirus test,” said López Obrador, who turned to López-Gatell to ask if he had to be asked. and he replied no.

The Mexican president recalled that he has ordered his cabinet that only the health authorities express themselves about the global pandemic since “if it is left in the hands of politicians and politicians it is worse.”

He also attacked the media for reporting last night on the death with COVID-19 of a businessman close to magnate Carlos Slim, a fact denied by the authorities.

“There is unrest in the media because they received a lot of money for advertising, many columnists received money and it was subsidized,” he said of previous governments.

While countries like Colombia or Argentina have announced the closure of their borders due to the Wuhan coronavirus crisis, the Government of Mexico has not yet adopted drastic measures beyond announcing the closure of schools on March 20 and the suspension of events with more than 5,000 people.

Undersecretary López-Gatell justified on Monday that “the massive closings across the country have very serious consequences for the economies of the most disadvantaged.”

“In Mexico, half of the population has conditions of poverty as a result of the economic policies of the last 40 years. That is a population that must be protected,” he said.

López Obrador continued his tour of the southern state of Guerrero, on the Pacific coast, on Sunday, holding rallies and hugging with crowds despite the recommendations of the Ministry of Health and criticism for his inaction in the face of this crisis.
