European countries should not be surprised by the easing of restrictions imposed by the Covid-19 crisis, European Commission (EC) President Urzula von der Leiena warned on Wednesday, pointing to the risks of a third wave of a coronavirus pandemic after Christmas.
As the Christmas holidays approach, some European Union (EU) countries have begun to slowly reduce restrictions, including the requirement for residents to stay primarily at home, in an effort to reduce the spread of the virus.
However, Leiena warned MEPs: “We need to learn from the summer, and we must not repeat the same mistakes, too fast a reduction in restrictions.”
“Too rapid a relief, and too great a risk of a third wave after Christmas,” the EC president said.
“A few weeks ago, I said this Christmas would be different. And yes, it would be quieter,” she added.
