The Prague metro is facing a major closure. It will affect traffic in the center

“During that time, we will repair the longest section in the very center of Prague,” said Aneta Řehková, DPP spokeswoman. At that time, trains will run only in the sections between Letňany and Hlavní nádraží and between the Pražského povstání and Háje stations. In the closed section Hlavní nádraží – Pražského povstání, DPP will introduce an alternative bus line XC.

The replacement of old wooden sleepers with new concrete ones on line C started this spring. Due to this, the first lockout took place during Easter. At that time, workers in the section of the Prague Uprising – Pankrác replaced 404 sleepers.

The current reconstruction will be even larger. It will cover 588 old wooden boards. According to Prague Integrated Transport, exclusion is inevitable. “If only the time when the metro is not in operation is to be used, it would take decades to replace all sleepers,” explains its spokesman Filip Drápal. “During that time, the sleepers that are just waiting to be replaced would continue to dry out or rot,” he added.

It was originally planned that the route would be closed for ten days. However, the transport company wants to speed up the work and finish it the day before.

The current exclusion is not the last to take place on line C this year. Another is planned for September, when the employees of the transport company will exchange 198 sleepers between the Pražského povstání and Kačerov stations, and together with that also another 98 sleepers between the Budějovická and Kačerov stations. This exclusion will take place from 26 to 29 September.

In total, the transport company will replace over a thousand old sleepers this year, some of which even remember the start of operation of the metro in 1974.
