The police and the Good Samaritan rescue a man from the subway tracks

Two police officers and a Good Samaritan rescued a man who had fallen onto subway tracks at a Harlem station on Thanksgiving, according to police reports.

The fact was captured in shocking body camera footage of an NYPD officer.

“The heroism of NY’s Finest always amazes me. For the @NYPD25Pct officers who rescued a man from an oncoming train after he accidentally fell onto the Manhattan subway tracks yesterday, courage is second nature. Join us to me to say hello to these awesome cops!” wrote Police Commissioner Keechant Sewell in a message on social networks with images from the video.

The man suffered from a health problem that caused him to fall onto the train tracks.

The officers were patrolling on a platform at the 116th Street station in East Harlem when they heard a commotion on the opposite platform.

They ran to the opposite platform and jumped onto the tracks where the Good Samaritan already stood. In dramatic footage, the man is carried onto the platform just before the train arrives.

NY1 was able to speak with the two agents, who assured that they only had two minutes to carry out the rescue.

The agents stressed that when they discovered it they didn’t hesitate to throw themselves on the tracks.

And they emphasized that they are very clear that whenever someone needs help they have to take action, recognizing that this kind of dangerous situation doesn’t give them time to stop and think.

MTA President and CEO Janno Lieber said in a statement Friday:

“The joint effort by Governor Hochul and Mayor Adams to have more NYPD officers patrolling subway stations and on trains not only helps commuters feel safer, but in this case has allowed brave officers and good Samaritan – in the best New York tradition of helping each other – to save a life.”

Ultimately, no injuries were reported and the crash remains under investigation.
