The Polemic of Markis Kido Wasn’t Buried in the Hero’s Cemetery

Jakarta, CNN Indonesia

Indonesian badminton legend, Hariyanto Arbi regrets the corpse of the 2008 Beijing Olympics medal-winning badminton player, Markis Kido, who cannot be buried in the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery (TMP), South Jakarta.

Through his Instagram social media account, Hariyanto Arbi questioned the Ministry of Youth and Sports. He also asked the Ministry of Youth and Sports to formulate sports heroes, especially those who have won medals at the Olympics, to be able to get awards and live afterward.

“I think Markis Kido is worthy. It’s a shame why he can’t be buried in the Heroes’ Cemetery. Think about it. What does it look like to be worthy? Is it still not enough to be a champion at the Olympics?” said Hariyanto Arbi to CNNIndonesia.com, Tuesday (15/6).

In addition, Hariyanto Arbi asked the government through the Ministry of Youth and Sports (Kemenpora) to be able to fight for the rights of athletes who successfully raised the Red and White flag and sang the anthem Indonesia Raya at the Olympics to get the appropriate award.

The award, said Hariyanto Arbi, is in the form of guaranteeing welfare in old age to being treated like a national hero so that he can be buried in the Kalibata Heroes Cemetery (TMP).

“Try to make it clear in the future. Athletes who get medals at the Olympics can get privileges as an appreciation that what these athletes have done so far is appreciated by the state. The DPR can only get pension money, if it’s a sports hero, it can be done,” he said

Confirmed separately, Minister of Youth and Sports (Menpora) Zainudin Amali explained the reason Markis Kido could not be buried at TMP Kalibata. According to this, it is regulated in a regulation at the Ministry of Social Affairs, namely in the form of special criteria regarding who has the right to be buried at the Kalibata TMP.
