The play Poder i Santedat premieres at the Teatro Principal in Valencia Radio Valencia | News

“Theater is freedom. But freedom is inseparable from truth because, as Jesus teaches, the truth sets us free. A truth documented as the Nobel Prize winner Harold Pinter wanted: emotional truth and public truth contrasted in diversity.”

These are the basic elements that show PODER Y SANTIDAD, the text by the playwright Manuel Molins who received the Pere Capellà 2017 October Theater Award. We spoke in “Hoy por Hoy. Locos por València” with the author of the play he directs on stage Azorin

This text moves in the field of freedom because it has investigated the plural truth and assumes the risk of presenting a series of too lively topics, avoiding scandal or easy denunciation. On the contrary: it places us in a context of reflection to promote a new utopia: Milan Kundera insisted that the loss of faith in angels is also the loss of faith in a different and more just future. For this reason, the angels that accompany the young Lucio’s journey are the expression of this attempt to contemplate a new reality since, despite everything, utopia as the truth are still possible in this time of fakes and so many miseries. Lucio searches and we search with him for a new hope that will give us the meaning of the words: sodomy, for example. The word is still associated with sexual depravity. But a fresh look at the biblical texts does not corroborate this.

Neither the story of Sodom (Gn 19) nor even less the reference to Jesus in the New Testament (Mt 11, 20-24): the sin of Sodom is the denial of asylum and hospitality to strangers and migrants seeking work, peace and food. And this is also one of the sins of our time: the sodomitic Europe that rejects refugees and those who long for a more dignified life. The story focuses on the Vatican as it could be set elsewhere. But this state is especially significant for being the spiritual center of world Catholicism as well as a nest of anti-faith news and a swarm of anti-sanctity power plays. We accompany the young protagonist in his search and assume the risks of freedom: such we will believe less in power and more in goodness.
