– The new Barbie movie required so much pink paint that there was a worldwide shortage
Not only clothes and decor, but almost every visible object in the Barbie film adaptation is painted pink.

The new film “Barbie” with Margot Robbie and Ryan Gosling, which will be released in German-speaking Switzerland on July 19, is all about one thing: the color pink. Not only the clothes and the interior, but also all the houses and streets and even the sand on the beach shine in a bright pink. This required vast amounts of color on the set of the film, which was shot at Warner Brothers Studios Leavesden, north west of London, in 2022.

Director Greta Gerwing explained to the magazine «Architectural Digest»: «It was of the utmost importance that the childlike character was preserved. I wanted the pink tones to be very light and for everything to be almost too much. In other words, I didn’t want to forget what I loved about Barbie when I was a little girl.” The construction of the film sets triggered a global shortage of pink at the company Rosco, which specializes in set colors, explained the set designer Sarah Greenwood to the interior design magazine: “The world had no more pink”.

The reason for the color shortage was not only the large amount of color needed, but also problems with global supply chains due to the corona pandemic, according to Rosco’s marketing manager told the Los Angeles Times: «They used up as much paint as we had. There was a bottleneck and we gave them everything we could.” In addition, an extreme cold spell with temperatures well below zero at the beginning of 2021 meant that parts of the components required for paint production became unusable.
The film will tell a story of self-discovery as Barbie (Margot Robbie) and Ken (Ryan Gosling) escape from the perfect world of Barbie-Land to discover the real world.
