“The Piano Lesson” by Jane Campion, the only woman to have won the Palme d’Or

How do you recognize a great film? Images that remain etched in memory? Sensations that go beyond history? Actors who disappear behind their character? A narration that takes us beyond the end of the film? There is all this in the film of Jane Campion, webbed, Oscar winner, Caesarized, in 1993 and 1994.

We discover Ada (Holly Hunter), a Scottish single mother married to a stranger, on the other side of the world, in New Zealand. Ada is silent, a pianist, wrapped up in her heavy black clothes from the mid-19th century.e.

With her little girl, she arrives by sea. Her husband (Sam Neill) does not want to burden himself with his piano in the muddy paths that lead to his plantation. The piano remains forgotten on a beach beaten by the waves.

Another man (Harvey Keitel), a frustrated worker close to the Maoris, understands that this piano is inseparable from Ada. Fascinated by her pallor and her secrets, he wants to seduce her …

But the movie goes well beyond the basic love trio. There is the strangeness of the situation, the predictable drama, the enslavement of women, the ardent eroticism of the bodies, the beauty of the images and the music… A real lesson in cinema! 2 h.
