SARPSBORG (VG) Three women were stabbed in three different places in Sarpsborg on Wednesday night. One of the victims was sitting in a car waiting for a relative when she was stabbed to death.
A previously convicted 31-year-old man has been arrested and will be charged with murder and attempted murder. This is stated by the police in a press release on Wednesday morning.
– The incident last night had a tragic outcome where one woman in her 50s died, another was seriously injured and a third injured, but with less serious injuries. The perpetrator has previously been convicted of violence, says police inspector Agnes Beate Hemiø.
– So far we have confirmed that the perpetrator has a relationship with two of the victims. The police do not currently have information that there is a relationship between the perpetrator and the deceased.
The arrested man is a Norwegian citizen of foreign origin.
– I’m on my way to meet my client now. Interrogation is scheduled today. I have no comments beyond that, says the accused’s defense counsel, Vigdis Brandstorp, to VG.
Three different places
The investigation so far confirms that there is only one perpetrator behind the stabbing in Sarpsborg on Wednesday night.
Around 11.30 pm, the police received a report of a stabbed woman at the bus stop in Sarpsborg. The woman was sitting in a car waiting for a relative, according to police.
The police sent all available crews to Sarpsborg when they were notified of the incident, which they considered “ongoing life-threatening violence (PLIVO)”. They also encouraged people to stay indoors.
– A few minutes later we received a new message about another stabbed woman, this time in St. Nikolas gate. The last injured, who was found at an address in Oskars gate, we were notified about 10 minutes after the first message.
Tells that he witnessed the arrest: – Counted up to twelve police cars
One hour after the police received the first message, the perpetrator was arrested at his address – after one of the victims recognized him. The police want to interrogate the man during the day.
– Investigations of the person in question and the police’s contact with him so far, indicated that he was presented to a doctor and was later admitted to hospital. The police are now investigating whether the man’s mental health has had an impact on the course of events, says the police inspector.
– I could see paper and blood
Witnesses that VG spoke to last night say that the perpetrator went from place to place.
Two of them say that they were called by one of those who called for help. The person was indoors, and the two had to kick in the door to get inside. The perpetrator had then moved on.
A witness tells VG at 01.30 that there must have been a woman lying on the ground in Oscars gate around 23.30.
– I could see paper and blood, and it was complete chaos.
Police and an ambulance must have arrived at the scene. The witness says that there was also another incident further down the street, where there were also police and an ambulance in place.
– The police screamed and there was a lot of chaos.
