The organizers of the “Three Star Awards” promise a more open process in evaluating the performance of athletes – Sports

2020 will be a turning point in determining the best athletes, coaches, teams and other events related to the sports industry. A new concept in honor of achievements is being introduced in the Latvian sports community – the “Three Star Award”.

“From this year, a new, more democratic and publicly open award concept for honoring achievements in the sports sector is being introduced in Latvia,” reveals Sandis Riekstiņš, Chairman of the Sports Subcommittee of the Saeima Education, Culture and Science Commission. “The” Three Star Award “envisages a range of new nominations, as well as greater public involvement in determining the winners. In the future, the nominations will also include local governments and sports federations, the effective operation of which is very important for the development of sports in Latvia.”

“In honor of the achievements of the new concept, we are creating so that the award in the sports sector develops, becomes more democratic, more open to the public and confirms the unity and equivalence of the sports sector,” emphasizes Georges Tikmer, President of the Latvian Olympic Committee. “The” Three Star Award “recognizes, identifies and honors athletes, teams and organizations – sports excellence in Latvia, it will unite and unite the Latvian sports industry, as well as strengthen the prestige of the sports industry.”

“The new award concept also includes closer cooperation between the Latvian Olympic Committee and the Latvian Paralympic Committee,” emphasizes Daiga Dadzīte, President of the Latvian Paralympic Committee. “The award in Paralympic sports is no longer a special award, but a permanent nomination equal to all other nominations. In addition, representatives and achievements of Paralympic sports may be nominated in other nominations. This confirms the equivalence of achievements in sports and parasailing, Olympic and Paralympic sports.”

The “Three Star Award” will be presented in 12 nominations:

• Sports teacher (determined by the Ministry of Education and Science);

• Lifelong contribution to sport (nominated by the jury);

• Paralympic athlete;

• Athlete of the Year;

• Athletes of the year;

• Sports team of the year;

• Annual sports team in individual sports;

• Coach of the year;

• Annual breakthrough in sports;

• Sports Federation of the Year;

• Sports Municipality of the Year;

• Annual event in sports.

Applicants in each nomination (except for the nominations Sports Teacher and Lifetime Contribution to Sport) will be nominated by a wide range of sports professionals and sports journalists, while the vote of the people, sports journalists, as well as athletes will play a decisive role in the voting.

The vote for the “Three Star Awards” nominations will take place in two rounds. The first round will take place from October 5 to 23, when candidates in 10 nominations will be nominated, while the second round will take place from November 5 to 29. In the second round, there will be a vote, where 50% will be determined by public opinion, and the remaining half will be determined by accredited sports journalists and athletes.

The task of the jury of the “Three Stars Award” will be to summarize and approve the voting results, nominate and approve the nomination for Lifetime Contribution to Sport, as well as authorize the results of the Ministry of Education and Science sports pedagogue competition. The jury will consist of 9 members and its head is Sandis Riekstins, head of the Saeima Sports Subcommittee, but the members are representatives from the Ministry of Education and Science – Līga Lejiņa and Edgars Severs, Latvian Olympic Committee – Juris Binde and Kārlis Lejnieks, Latvian Paralympic Committee – Daiga Dadzīte and Kaspars Iesaliņš, Latvian Sports Federation Councils – Einars Fogelis and Mārtiņš Lazdovskis.

The “Three Star Award” will be presented for the first time on December 29 at 19:00 at the “Hanseatic Platform”.

The “Three Star Award” event in honor of the achievements of the sports society is organized by the leading Latvian sports organizations – the Latvian Olympic Committee, the Latvian Paralympic Committee and the Latvian Sports Federation Council, with the support of the Ministry of Education and Science.
