the offers of the operators

5G is opening a gap in Spain little by little, if not very little by little. The deployments of Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Yoigo they mix a real 5G with a papier-mâché 5G (DSS), which makes compatible mobiles put 5G but offers hardly any advantages. Everything is waiting for the 5G to be deployed in the “good” band, the 700 MHz band that is still pending auction.

And in the middle of all this mess we are the users and the logical doubt: Is it worth buying a mobile with 5G now? A question that, above all, will be presented to those who have to urgently renew their mobile. Until not long ago, buying a mobile with 5G meant making a significant outlay and also having the uncertainty of whether or not it would be worth the 5G to come. Today it is already possible to find smartphones with 5G for 200 euros, without doubts that it will be compatible with the 5G to be deployed.

Buying a free mobile, in any physical or online store, is the most common way today, but is it worth looking at the operators’ catalogs again in search of a 5G smartphone? Now that the free price has dropped so much it is already possible to get them for zero euros, with its corresponding permanence of 24 or 36 months, in the four main operators. Yes, in Movistar, Orange, Vodafone and Yoigo, although some of them do not give much hype.

Yoigo, who makes it easier

Yoigo has never abandoned the mobile subsidy, in fact it is one of its main hooks, taking you a free mobile when contracting one of its rates. They tend to be rather low-end mobiles, between 100 and 150 euros, but since March it is already possible to opt even for mobiles with 5G. It is the case of Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T 5G (about 200 euros free), which you can get free, in exchange for 24 months of permanence, with the mobile rate or the fiber pack with unlimited data.

From May it is also possible to get the free Motorola Moto G50 (about 279 euros free) free with the pack with fiber and unlimited data, or for 1 euro per month plus 50 euros of final payment with the mobile rate with unlimited data. The difference with the most recent offer from Movistar is that Yoigo also facilitates the purchase with mobile rates, while in Movistar only subsidies or free mobiles with Fusion rates are available.

Yoigo offers 5G mobiles at no additional cost by hiring unlimited data

But in addition to the models that do not imply additional payments to the rates themselves, Yoigo also has a few 5G smartphones at fairly low prices, like the Oppo A54 5G and Samsung Galaxy A32 5G from 1 euro per month and 49 euros of final payment (73 euros in total). Of course, the best offers are only for those who hire unlimited data.

Movistar: a limited offer

Movistar is announcing with great fanfare its new Fusion offer, in which, as we already mentioned, it includes a smartphone at no additional costAlthough he has just raised his rates by three euros a month without any other benefit. And although there is no explicit permanence, there is a penalty for those who do not stay three years with the operator, which applies both to mobiles included in the offer and those with an additional monthly fee.

Beyond the small print of Movistar’s “free” mobiles, its offer is quite limited at the moment. Although his mobile catalog includes more than 80 models, only 11 of them have special conditions when contracting a Merger. And the only way to get a 5G mobile at no additional cost is to hire the highest Fusion rates, the Total or Total Plus, which include the Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T 5G.

Movistar only offers a 5G mobile without additional fees in the most expensive Mergers

At lower rates, from Fusion Inicia, you can also access the same mobile but paying 5 euros per month in addition to the rate for 36 months. In that case, it would be 180 euros of total payment, so the savings compared to the free price are rather scarce. For the same additional fee, the Oppo Reno4 Z 5G is also available, which costs about 319 euros for free, so there is more subsidy in it.

The rest of the Movistar smartphone catalog includes 5G devices with good prices, but without any subsidy. In fact, the options to pay them in installments exist, but in most cases this financing only has no interest if it is limited to 3 or 6 months. Above these terms, the interests rise above 10% APR, so it is not worth resorting to financing.

Vodafone: hidden but has free 5G mobiles

Vodafone was once the king of “free” mobiles, especially for those who made a portability threat. But that time is already far away and today sporadically, depending on the time of year, it is possible to get a smartphone at no additional cost to the rate coming from another company, although always from the entry range. 5G mobiles at no additional cost in Vodafone are not seen, but exist they exist, only that they are very hidden.

Without searching much it is possible to find 5G mobile phones, such as the Xiaomi Redmi Note 10, from 5 euros per month for 36 months with mobile rates and fiber and mobile packs. With the “normal” rates, so to speak, there is no way to get a 5G smartphone for less than that additional monthly fee. The jackpot is reserved for those who contract the Unlimited Home rates.

Vodafone also has free 5G mobiles, but it hardly gives hype to the offer

These packs, which include fiber, at least two mobile lines with unlimited data and television, as well as other services, start at 95 euros per month. With them you can get a Huawei P40 Lite 5G or a Xiaomi Redmi Note 9T at no additional cost, with a stay of 24 months. The funny thing is that the offer is quite hidden, it is not visible on the operator’s website and can only be seen within the operator’s monthly magazine. You don’t want to get into these Vodafone wars.

Orange also joins the movement

Stephane Richard, CEO of Orange. (Reuters)

With all its rivals offering, with more or less demands, free 5G mobiles, Orange has finally joined this trend. From this same Monday it offers with your Go Top mobile rate (unlimited calls and data without restrictions for 47.95 euros per month), a Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 at no additional cost, in exchange for 24 months of permanence. The mobile also comes with a free Mi True Wireless 2S headset.

Orange reserves the 5G smartphone for free at its most unlimited mobile rate

In the case of Love rates, fiber packs and mobile, Orange also offers several 5G mobiles with very low monthly fees, which represent a significant savings compared to the price of free mobiles. The Oppo A74 and Xiaomi Redmi Note 10 have a monthly fee of 3 euros, for the 4 euros of the Samsung Galaxy A32 and Galaxy A42.

A tip: first the rate, then the mobile

Considering the offers of the operators, a warning for those who can blur their vision: choose the rate wisely. A mobile with 5G is very tempting, much more than the most basic mobiles that operators have “given away” in recent times, but it is only advisable to access these offers yes really the rate that is associated with the free or discounted mobile adapts to our needs.

In all operators, to get a free 5G smartphone it is necessary to contract a mobile rate or fiber pack with unlimited data. The cheapest mobile rate with unlimited data from these operators is Yoigo’s, for 35 euros per month, for the 25 euros of the Digi rate. Those 10 euros of difference per month they give to pay for a 5G mobile. That is why before launching into the free mobile hook, it is preferable first to compare rates and then, if the rate that suits us offers it, look at the mobile offers.
