The number of severely ill Covid-19 patients in hospitals has increased significantly over the past week

Over the past week, the number of detected Covid-19 cases has increased by 25.5%, a steady increase is also observed in hospitalized patients – 18.5%. An average of 366 Covid-19 patients were treated in hospitals every day. The number of patients with severe disease has also increased by 59% (average 49 patients per day), according to data compiled by the Center for Disease Prevention and Control (SPKC).

The number of newly diagnosed cases of Covid-19 remained stable last week, increasing by 25.5%.

Of all the tests performed, 60% (91,611 tests) were related to screening of educational institutions, but 40% (61,020 tests) – to the rest of the population. Of the positive cases of Covid-19, 12% (520 infected) were related to educational screening, and 88% (3706 infected) were detected in the rest of the community. Of all the infections detected in the screening, more than half or 57.4% of epidemiologists during the survey revealed that they had symptoms of the disease.

The increase in morbidity is still observed in all age groups, the most pronounced among 10- to 14-year-old adolescents. The number of newly diagnosed cases of Covid-19 increased in all regions last week.

The reproductive rate (R) of Covid-19 infection last week was 1.21 (1.14 a week earlier), indicating the prevalence of infectious disease in the community.

Of the cases of Covid-19 infection detected last week, 3,389 people had not been vaccinated against Covid-19 or had not yet completed a vaccination course, which is 80% of all cases in the past week. In turn, 837 people or 20% of all patients were vaccinated last week. Comparing the intensity of infection per 100,000 population among vaccinated and unvaccinated / partially vaccinated people, Covid-19 infection was found 3.3 times more often in unvaccinated and partially vaccinated people in Latvia than in fully vaccinated people.

SPKC specialists note that as the number of vaccinated persons increases and the prevalence of Covid-19 infection continues to be prevalent among unvaccinated people, the overall incidence of vaccinated human infections will increase. However, among vaccinated people, the disease is more often mild and requires less hospitalization, so the proportion of vaccinated and sick people should always be seen in the context of the number of prevented Covid-19 cases in the general population.

The European average of 14 days of cumulative morbidity per 100,000 population continues to decline slightly to 156.8 (171.2 a week earlier). In Latvia, this indicator has increased to 316.7 (255.5 a week ago).
