After Friday’s record increase of 506 people with positive tests for coronavirus, their number increased by another 239 on Saturday. The last non-working day when more positive tests were published was June 28, but even before that, more than 200 cases rarely increased these days. However, Friday and Saturday have the same denominator, according to hygienists – an increased number of tests performed in total.

On Friday, laboratories evaluated 8432 samples, which was one of the highest numbers ever – though not quite the highest – and testing should not slow down. Therefore, according to the head of health statisticians Ladislav Dušek, a significant decrease in the number of positive cases cannot be expected.

“A larger volume of tests will inevitably lead to more newly diagnosed people throughout the autumn. The disease permeates the population of the whole of Europe, the Czech Republic is no exception. At the moment, a number of other states report very high numbers, “he pointed out.

As early as Saturday, however, Chief Hygienist Jarmila Rážová and Prime Minister Andrej Babiš (YES) emphasized that it was not the high number of people with confirmed infections that they considered essential, but the relatively low number of those in whom covid-19 had a serious course. Babiš pointed out that there are only about 110 patients in hospitals out of a total of more than five thousand. According to Rážová, most cases are asymptomatic. This is also related to the fact that covid-19 does not spread significantly among risk groups, the chief hygienist stated that mainly young and middle-aged people became infected.

Dušek is also convinced that the increased number of positive tests alone does not need to be seriously feared. “At the moment, the number of new diagnoses is not a determining factor in the risk of the disease. What is important is the morbidity of those people – whether they are really sick and also what our situation is in hospitals, “he said. According to him, even people who ended up in hospitals are “relatively easy”.
